Printing Technique: Halftone Litho?
Notes: The printing technique is difficult to identify, though it was likely performed on a mechanical printing press. Under magnification, it appears different than typical offset lithographic prints. Rather than halftone dot patterns, there is a distinguishable pattern of 45-degree solid lines in darker areas (second image below), with broken lines in lighter parts (third image below). This same printing technique has been identified in other flyers for shows around the same location and date (02/12/90 - Sacramento, 08/17/90 - Los Angeles, 08-19-90 - San Diego).
There are many circulating photocopies of this flyer. One of them came from Flipside journalist Carlos "Cake" Nunez. He met Kurt and Courtney on several occasions, has photos that were taken with them, and claims that he grabbed the flyer at the time of the show. This indicates that someone affiliated with the venue, promoter or band(s) made additional photocopies of the original flyer for circulation. Therefore, having documented provenance to accompany a photocopy variation will help to distinguish from a recent copy, as will examination of the paper to determine its age. Mint photocopy variations without any provenance should be avoided.
