They probably did not write anything on the first copper mother (master copper). Then they copied it an made a set of father places, of which again more mothers were made (and then stampers). It's probably these mothers which were numbered. So perhaps some day in 1993 (or whatever) they made a copper mother and never put any numbers on it. I don't know...

I agree with you about roman numerals, that could identify a copied mother . It's pretty common with DMM to use first stampers made by copper mother as a father to originate a copied mother. It's a good way to avoid a new cut from master. My doubts were about the release date if it's true that Sonopress stopped the vinyl production in 1992. 
I don't know...anyway these Sonopress Geffen logo are pretty uncommon, more rare than Sonopress DGC label.
