Cleaning up??
#1
It has been a while since I have been here.

I have noticed that as streamlined as this forum remains, it has taken a decline.

Does the host server not permit enough space to host images which can be uploaded for release threads, so that the posts are not dependant on other servers hosting the images?

If this is unfeasible, why not hotlink to images/pages hosted on discogs?

Some forums allow that thread creators can edit their first post forever, and doing this might allow thread starters to upload new images, or change the image links.

Also, and this is a flat out separate suggestion;
Has it been considered to slightly tweak hierarchy of the forum indexes?

Let me elaborate;

Right now as an example there is an Albums/EP's forums;
That forum has twenty pages of threads;
Why not under the albums forum, make on dedicated to the three studio albums, two compilations, and official live albums (all of which were multi-platfom releases (eg: cassette, record, and cd)
- Bleach (all version except anniversary re-releases)
- Nevermind (all version except anniversary re-releases)
- Incesticide (all version except anniversary re-releases)
- Hormoaning
- In Utero (all version except anniversary re-releases)
- Unplugged (all version except anniversary re-releases)
- Muddy Banks
- Bleach 20th
- Nevermind 20th
- In Utero 20th (including the 2013 RSD remix LP set)
- Record Store Day releases (except In Utero remix LP)
- Post-1990's compilations

I would suggest that indexing this way would make the forum easier to use and search.

I find it kind of strange, too, that it's not possible to store images here. I remember back when I made my websites back in early 2000's I had to be careful about image size, but getting large storage space for a reasonable price shouldn't really be a problem today? (Then again, I am not the one paying the bill....)

Depending on third party storage services is a terrible solution, as they change their policies, delete images, etc.. So much is lost over time.

I agree with your indexing suggestion too, but what would be even better is if the images and information posted here would be archived in a discography like website like Enrico's now more or less defunct site. I think Discogs is a terrible solution to this, because it is user editable. Users make errors, some have little attention to detail (for example one entry contains images of several similar pressings presenting them as the same item), and some people don't really know what they are doing at all.

I think it was Pedro who said it was a weakness of Enrico's site that it was run by one person, too much for one person to do. But I disagree. A good discography site should be run by ONE person who has complete overview, but the information comes from multiple contributors - properly edited and formatted for the site owner to simply sort and paste into where it belongs. Hopefully that will happen some day.. Smile

I still like Enrico site.

I did stumble upon this thread, and something like it for each category might server to negate the need to restructure anything...

I see you point, but the task needs to be done by a qualified group of collectors, with probably an administrator(s)/editor(s) - this way, things are done and mistakes and lack of common sense avoided.

That's pretty much exactly what I said. Info and properly edited images is fed by a group of collectors, while the final step of putting it into the website is done by an evil mastermind. You need one person to see the full picture.

I'm going to bump this;
I noticed that you can now upload images;
You need to "preview post" after which below the text box there is the option to add images.
I found out by trial and error that file size per upload is limited to 500kb - or about 1400x pixles for a jpg format image.
Also, you can add up to five images per post- BUT!!
(And again, I stumbled on this more or less by accident)
If you make a second (in a row) post under an unspecified time limit, then the posts are automatically merged.

I was adding images for the 2012 RSD Incesiticide (I recently sold my copy) when I figured this all out.

I had trouble trying to find the "discussion" for that specific release, but the Album/EP index worked like a charm after flipping through several pages of discussions when searching "Incesiticide".

Speaking of looking for releases here;
I will momentarily make another thread about a release that appears to not have a specific discussion (at least I couldn't find it);
The 2001 release of Nevermind (German pressing 12" LP)
